Don’t Fall For This “Work From Home” Scam

Several years ago before I even thought about starting my online business I found this job opportunity in a local newspaper that I thought it was a legit opportunity to make some extra money from home and I’m glad I didn’t take it back then simply because I could’ve gotten in some serious trouble. Lately I’ve been seeing this scam more than ever and I want you to be aware of it so you can identify it and stay away from it.

It’s the “Account Receivable” job offer, where supposedly you’ll need to help these major companies coordinate and process payments from their customers and in return they’ll pay you either a percentage of the money you receive or a monthly salary. Now the offer seems incredible, all you need to do is to receive checks from their so called clients, cash them in your bank and send them the money. It all seems legit but it’s not.

It’s money laundering, these people are using you to clean the money made from their illegal transactions, you can probably make some money at the beginning but once the IRS catches up to it you’ll be in serious trouble. Remember that all the money you receive to your name is consider income and since you will not be paying taxes for it the IRS will make you pay the high price. In some instances jail sentence.

Let’s take a look at the email I received a couple of days ago, read it and I will then explain you how you can identify this type of scam.

At first hand this email seems like the real deal coming from a widely known furniture company but let me explain you the first thing you need to look for in order to identify the scam.

  1. Email address - This is the email they used to send the message, ashleyfurniture.resume@gmail.com, Do you notice anything wrong with this email? Gmail is a free email account provided by Google and a multimillionaire company will never use anything like that, their website is www.ashleyfurniture.com and if they were to send you an email from their company instead of reading ashleyfurnitureresume@gmail.com it would be resume@ashleyfurniture.com Did you notice how the company name is after the @ symbol and not before? That’s how you know that the email is coming from the real company.
  2. Unprofessional writing skills - The message is just one big paragraph with no line breaks and it has several grammar errors. This the common scam artist writing in a hurry to make a quick buck.
  3. Payments sent to your name? - Do you think a company like this will send you checks to your name expecting you to cash them and send them back? Why would they trust you?

Scam artists are everywhere looking for their next victim and in this world where often times money is so hard to find one could fall for an offer like this unaware of the consequences it may cause.

  1. Wish I had seen this first. Would have saved me a few minutes. My e-mail did seen too good, so I wrote Ashley Furniture & crossed my fingers that I got the real website, & they sent me infor on how to report this scam.
Thanks, hope everyone else will read this. As you said, technically the “duped” are performing a service & getting paid for it. But the service is for illegal money laundering, unfortunately. Not unlike unknowingly passing counterfeit money these days when the US currency has changed so dramatically, most people couldn’t figure out what’s real anymore.
